about el

el (that’s me):

•graduated from rhode island school of design on scholarship where I walked up steep hills*, drank lots of caffeinated beverages and was chosen to live and work  in Rome on the European Honors Program for a year.

•worked for a spell as a book designer for a publishing company. The highlight…I met Mr. Rogers. His watch had musical notes instead of numbers.

•I wanted to work for National Geographic. Photographing the highest mountaintops and Jane Goodall with the chimpanzees. I was six years old. “A little young.” they said. “C’est la vie” I replied.

Now I just like to travel. Plane, train, automobile, subway, on foot, or most of the time by sketchbook and pencil.

I also have a shop called elloh.

My pop culture inspired art and work from my own stories has made its way around the world in gallery shows (Salt Lake City to Miami to…), in print form and commissions for clients like The Office tv show or a surprise portrait for a new dad in Vancouver for Father’s Day.

I’m also a fan of humor, writing, books, words, world languages & cultures, portraits, libraries**, coffee, tea (I always feel British), typography and hand lettering, playing guitar (horribly but happily), old school darkroom photography, bright, saturated color including the black and white of old movies and comics, artists like Red Grooms, Al Hirschfeld, Edward Gorey, Alice Neel, Art Spiegelman, Beatrix Potter, Elizabeth Layton, William Blake, Maira Kalman, Van Gogh, Sorolla, Quino, Mary Blair… and finally making my ideas into something tangible that can be worn, read or displayed.

Thanks, gracias, danke, grazie, arigato, merci, high five…

*where I first heard of the movie ‘Rocky’ even though I’m from “Philly” (Philadelphia). I am currently an expert and can now run up the art museum steps like the out of shape Rocky in the beginning of the first movie.

**I’ve worked in libraries & bookstores from highschool, through all of college and after for a time. Other jobs have been teaching in art centers and colleges, ages 2 years old (mounds of mess was the name of the class, that’s all I need to say) to college Sophomores and Juniors majoring in Illustration to someone 98 years young (she was a great grandmother in my snow globe making workshop) and many other jobs. Another page will have to be made for that someday. :)
